“Reconceptualising the Teaching of Linguistic Disciplines in Higher Education in the Context of War: Experiences of Designing and Implementing the University Course ‘Digital Technologies for the Ukrainian Language'”
It was a presentaion at the German and Slavic Studies IІI International multidisciplinary conference Resilience in Education Amid War and Global Challenges: Ukrainian Perspective (Winnipeg, Canada) by professor of the Department of General Linguistics Solomij Buk.
In the context of war, digital technologies become not only a tool for the survival of education, but also a catalyst for profound transformations of university disciplines. The course ‘Digital Technologies for the Ukrainian Language’ is aimed at humanities students from all Ukrainian higher education institutions whose education has been affected by the war. It can serve as an example of a flexible, multi-vector approach to learning in times of uncertainty. The course format combines synchronous online lectures and practical asynchronous modules, cloud-based environments for teamwork, and the use of modern NLP tools, large language models, AI, corpora, etc. to develop the Ukrainian language and conduct research in applied linguistics. The course not only teaches, but also supports: it takes into account the psychological state of the students, promotes the development of the academic community and adaptation to new realities. The experience of the course has shown that the digitalisation of humanities education in Ukraine can be an embodiment of sustainability, innovation, solidarity, inter-university cooperation and international exchange in the field of teaching and linguistics.
The conference, hosted by the University of Manitoba, featured renowned speakers and scholars discussing critical topics such as resilience in higher education, innovative educational strategies in resource-limited contexts, psychological and societal challenges caused by war, as well as the transformation of education amidst global challenges. Participants engaged in plenary sessions, panel discussions, and talks addressing the urgent educational needs during times of conflict. It fosters international academic cooperation and contributes to building resilient, inclusive, and future-oriented education systems.
