“Someone Else’s Story” – Literary Voices from Ukraine with Sofia Andrukhovych, Olena Huseinova, Halyna Kruk, and Karl Schlögel

For more than four years, Vladimir Putin has been waging a brutal war against Ukraine, a war that shows no sign of ending. Russia’s attack on its neighboring country has brought violence and destruction upon a free people who have since been fighting for their rights and their very survival.
On 6 June, Literatur Lana dedicates an evening of literature and contemporary history to Ukraine at Palais Mamming:
with Sofia Andrukhovych, Olena Huseinova, Halyna Kruk, Karl Schlögel, and Maria Weissenböck.
Halyna Kruk is a poet, prose writer, translator, critic, and literary scholar. In 2001, she earned a PhD in Ukrainian literature, and she is currently a Professor of Literary Studies at the University of Lviv.
Her most recent poetry collections in English translation are A Crash Course in Molotov Cocktails (2023) and Lost in Living (2024). In 2024, a collected volume of Halyna Kruk’s poetry was published, and its first print run of 3,000 copies sold out within three months. This was her seventh poetry collection, and she has since gained international recognition, particularly in Canada and the United States, where she was shortlisted for the prestigious Griffin Poetry Prize in 2024.
A Crash Course in Molotov Cocktails is her first standalone poetry collection published in German, and more than half of the poems were written between 2014 and 2025. In 2022, the award-winning poet delivered a powerful address at the poetry festival in Berlin.
She is a member of the National Writers’ Union of Ukraine and previously served as Vice President of Ukrainian PEN.
