the Arts Faculty’s Research Initiative on Post-Soviet Space is inviting applicants to undertake a PhD by research. Proposals may be related to Soviet and post-Soviet history, memory studies in post-Soviet space, or Ukrainian Studies.

Project Summary

The Research Initiative on Post-Soviet Space (RIPSS) invites prospective applicants with an interest in projects aligned with our research focus to submit an Expression of Interest for a PhD.

Project proposals are invited from a broad range of disciplines in one or more areas that align with the research focus of the Initiative, such as Soviet and post-Soviet history, memory studies on the post-Soviet space, or Ukrainian studies.

The successful applicant will be embedded within the Initiative in the School of Historical and Philosophical studies (SHAPS) in the Faculty of Arts. All applicants will be automatically considered for a Melbourne Research Scholarship.

The PhD Project research area

The Research Initiative on Post-Soviet Space (RIPSS) provides knowledge and understanding of the region formerly dominated by the Soviet Union. The urgent need for expertise on this complex and increasingly volatile region has been demonstrated by Russia’s war against Ukraine and its global fallout.

Desirable qualities and experience

• Linguistic competence in one or several languages of the post-Soviet space
• Experience with research on and in the post-Soviet space.
